Jambs
for fire doors are available as rated or non-rated interior and
rated or non-rated exterior. Building codes vary in different cities
and counties so check with your building inspection department to
verify what type of jamb will be required.
Our most commonly used jamb for our 20 minute fire doors in
residential construction would be our "FrameSaver" primed pine
exterior non-rated jamb. The inside edge of this jamb is left
natural so you can stain it to match your door. The garage side of
the jamb is primed and ready for paint.
Fire doors for residential construction are primarily used
between the house and attached garage. An exterior jamb is
recommended for this application. This will be a rabbetted jamb and
will include weatherstripping and a threshold that will keep the
cold air, bugs and rodents from entering the house from the
garage. Once again check with your building department to determine
if a non-rated jamb is sufficient.
